In general, the group of the toy spaniels are called as direct descendants of those small dogs which are found on plenty of paintings of the 16th, 17th and 18th century with van Dyck, Watteau, Boucher and many more. They were the darlings of the Italien and French court ladies and those in the Netherlands, too. King Charles II. of England was rarely to be seen without a dozen of small Spaniels. They even followed him to the parliament. That's why they are colled Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. Some people also claim the name refers to King Charles I.
During the reign of the Stuarts the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel nearly disappeared completely. In the 19th century the appeared again but in changed form. First in the year 1926 American visitors of the famous Londoner dog exhibition "Cruft's Show" drew attention to the fact that the showed Spaniels did not look like the original ones on the paintings. One of the visitors, Rosswell Eldridge, paid 25 pounds for this breeder who would be able to breed the old breed. Since 1928 this standard has not changed until today. The breed he bred is called Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a very nice and never unforgiving companion. It accepts other pets in the house, is social with other dogs and friendly to everyone. It can't deny its roots as a hunting dog and is always on search for delicious food like mice. But it is very loyal and does not tend to go own ways. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is adaptable, strong, tough and robust. It needs the nearness of its humans, loves movement and business. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is intelligent, never nervous or anxious, and easy to motivate. That's why sportive action is possible.
With loving consequence this dog is easily educated.
